Sandra Leal, PharmD, CDE
Sandra Leal, PharmD, CDE, is Director of Clinical Pharmacy at El Rio Health Center in Tucson, Ariz. She provides clinical services in the areas of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia to a predominantly Hispanic and American Indian population. Dr. Leal is also an adjunct instructor at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and at the A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Leal received her Bachelor's in Pharmacy and her Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. She completed her pharmacy practice residency at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson, Ariz.
Dr. Leal is the first pharmacist in Arizona to receive prescription authority. She has received the ASHP Best Practices Award in Health-Systems Pharmacy from the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, the Innovative Research in Primary Care Award from the National Association of Community Health Centers, the Pinnacle Award from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and was selected as Pharmacist of the Year by the Arizona Pharmacy Alliance. Her work has been published in Diabetes Care, The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Insulin Journal, and Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease.
Dr. Leal works to improve patient safety and health outcomes as a faculty member of HRSA's Patient Safety & Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative. She recently started working toward a Master's in Public Health degree to continue improving public health in underserved populations.
